This spring, Facilities Services began a construction project, expected to end this November, to replace three failing roofs across the Student Center (Stu). The construction has disturbed some community members, despite efforts to minimize disruptive construction during the school day.
Head of School Alixe Callen ’88 indefinitely suspended the Japan Exchange Trip, effective this school year. The decision to end the roughly 35-person trip, the centerpiece of a partnership-based exchange between Milton and two Japanese schools, stemmed from Callen’s concerns about the trip’s lack of relevance to Milton's curriculum and its financial and personnel costs. “I never want to take away something that students love… [but] I feel like part of what I’m hired to do is to make tough decisions,” said Callen.
For students who traveled on one of the three exchange programs this month, learning does not have to live in the classroom. On May 19, 21, and 27, students traveled to Spain, France, and Japan, to solidify modern language skills developed at Milton, to explore new cultures, and to deepen connections between Milton and other schools around the world. All programs partnered with local high schools and host families and featured programming that familiarized with local cultures.
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Is it a robotic bird soaring over campus? This May, Class I students are working on bringing their dreams to fruition through the Senior Project, a month-long capstone experience, free from the confines of traditional academic programming.
Despite occasional flurries of paper airplanes in the back of the Athletics and Convocation Center (ACC) bleachers, Lori Bednarchik—speaker, facilitator, and educator—taught students how to establish relationship boundaries during her March 31 address.
On December 13 at Brown University, Claudio Neves Valente killed two students while injuring nine more. The reverberations of this tragedy extend beyond Providence, including on Milton’s campus.
On October 27, Interim Dean of Students Liz Morrison began her first day, temporarily replacing José Ruiz, who left effective immediately on August 20. Upper School Principal Rachel Stone described how, as Dean of Students, Morrison will “serve as a connector across faculty leadership, keep a comprehensive eye on students, and lead the Discipline Committee.” Additionally, she will help organize a restructuring of the Office of Student Life to take place after her exit.
On September 17, Milton conducted its annual multi-hour Upper School lockdown training, which featured a presentation and simulated lockdown practices both outdoors and in classrooms.
On September 4, 109 student leaders met at the tri-annual Leadership Summit to hone their leadership skills and to plan new inter-club collaborations for the upcoming school year.
